1st Presbyterian Church

Ypsilanti, Michigan

Projects:

Exterior Historic Renovation

24,000SF Building

Work at the Main Towers:  tuckpoint brick, repair wooden moldings and soffits, structurally stabilize and rebuild overhanging trims, and treat rusted, decorative metals to prevent further decay.  Each Tower is approx. 90’ tall.  Extensive Construction scaffolding is shown above.

Interior and exterior, historic materials of the church towers had been damaged by vermin and water penetration over the last 150 years, despite maintenance efforts by the church.  The top of the towers had been capped by galvanized metal domes which had rusted through in many places.  Mitchell and Mouat’s efforts were to stabilize the structure and exterior skin - thus extending the life of this historic building.

Mitchell and Mouat Architects worked with the local historic Preservation Board, which is very pro-active in the community, for Final Design and Approval in refurbishing this very prominent, Ypsilanti Landmark.

Stained Glass Windows:  remove existing, yellowed Plexiglas coverings, detail installation of new protection incorporating custom, vented glass coverings.  Main rosette window (shown above) is a documented Tiffany window.

Work at the Secondary Towers:  replace water-damaged wooden window surrounds, repair roofing to prevent further damage and to establish structural integrity.  Photos above begin to indicate the extensive water damage that threatened to compromise the entire structure.
